In 'Part TWO, of EchoChamberFP this week, we have some fantastic stop animation for you!!!

We're casting our eye on a new Short film which is under consideration for a 'Best Animated Short Film' Oscar nomination! THEN we sit down with Rita Basulto, one of Mexico's brightest talents to learn how she was able to breathe life into this heart wrenching story. And Mariana Mendez Alejandre, another of Mexico's eminent stars also joins us to help with translation.

'Humo (Smoke)' is directed by Rita Basulto and written by Juan Medina, based on 'Fumée' the 2009 book by Antón Fortes & Joanna Concejo. The film is set during the Holocaust and follows the story of Daniel, a young boy who travels by train towards a dark destination known as the smokehouse.

Rita Basulto

Rita Basulto

Writer, Director, Stop Motion Animator, Cinematographer, Producer, Art Director

Rita Basulto is an award-winning Mexican animator specialized in stop motion. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences and the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences. She earned her degree in Fine Arts and Audiovisual Media at the University of Guadalajara, has participated as a fine arts artist in more than 20 exhibitions, and has won four Ariel Awards throughout her career. She has excelled as cinematographer, art and animation director in a variety of highly acclaimed short and feature films, the most prominent being Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

Rita is the co-founder and creative director of Outik Animation and Humanimalia Studio, a company that specializes in puppet making. Her most recent short film Smoke had its world premiere at the Guadalajara International Film Festival and its international premiere at Annecy.

Mariana Méndez Alejandre

Mariana Méndez Alejandre

Producer, Actress

Mariana Méndez Alejandre is a Mexican film producer based in New York City. She has produced several acclaimed short films including Zero Hour written by Guillermo Arriaga and Viva El Rey directed by Luis Tellez, as well as music videos for established artists such as multi Grammy winning band Los Tigres del Norte. She is a member of the Producers Guild of America.

Since 2017, she has supported the execution of Academy Award® campaigns for entertainment companies such as Focus Features (Promising Young Woman, Harriet, Blackkklansman, Downton Abbey, Mary Queen of Scots, Belfast), Warner Bros. (Motherless Brooklyn), Searchlight (A Hidden Life), Apple (Wolfwalkers) and GKIDS (Weathering With You, Mirai, Belle). As well as campaigns for the Oscar® winning shorts Skin (2019) and The Neighbor's Window (2020).

Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, she holds a Bachelor's Degree in Film and TV Production from the New York Film Academy and is currently an MBA candidate at New York University's Stern School of Business.
