Paul Oremland
Writer, Director, Producer, Editor
Paul Oremland has been at the forefront of exploring the LGTBQ+ experience in film & television over many years. His first TV program One In Five, for the then newly formed British TV Channel 4, caused an uproar in Parliament & calls for the channel to be taken of air. It was the first ever UK television to be made by an openly gay team.
Paul then went on to make a successful ground breaking series about ‘gay heroes’ for the channel. These included If They’d Asked for a Lion Tamer: a small town drag queen finds fame in the big city; & ‘Andy the Furniture Maker’ about a talented punk who rocked the art establishment...
“Brilliantly upbeat sketch on rebellion”. -Time Out.
A successful mainstream television career followed, which included award winning work for the BBC, ITV, and American networks. He also made his first television drama The Final Frame for Film On Four This was followed by a theatrical feature Like It Is which was released in over 30 countries.
Like It Is tells the story of a bare-knuckle boxer, struggling to come to terms with being gay. It won praise for its strong performances & featured The Who singer Roger Daltrey as a predatory music mogul...
“possibly the best ever gay adult love story made”
-Bay Area Reporter
Oremland’s second feature film, Surveillance a conspiracy thriller about a man framed for having information on a gay royal, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival.
After returning to New Zealand, his homeland, Paul made a feature documentary called 100 Men. It weaves together the personal and historical as he hunts down past lovers to look at the huge changes in the lives of gay men over his lifetime. After screening at a number of LGBTQ film festivals worldwide it was picked up by the streaming companies including Amazon Prime and Netflix.
Paul was brought up in a strict fundamentalist religion, even training to be a preacher! Now he finds himself exploring this past in his new film Mysterious Ways.
