Echo Chamber - BFI Flare - Day 4
It's the weekend and we're in 'Day 4' of the 'BFI Flare: London LGBTIQ+ Film Festival'.
Today's @EchoChamberFP has a fascinating documentary about a Billy Tipton an unsuspecting trans culture icon, with 'No Ordinary Man' from Chase Joynt & Aisling Chin-Yee and Amos Mac. Then things go full John Hughes with Jonathan Wysocki warm and infectious 'Dramarama'.
'No Ordinary Man' is co-directed by Chase Joynt & Aisling Chin-Yee who also co-wrote the piece with Amos Mac. It's a fascinating look at the life of Billy Tipton, a saxophonist, pianist, a big band leader, a family man, and after he died he became a trans culture icon. Because what people didn't know was, Billy transitioned on his own in the 1930's. This story is uniquely told, through archival footage, interviews, and a casting call.
With 'Dramarama' writer & director Jonathan Wysocki really taps into that John Hughes vibe and tells a heartfelt tale of Rose (Anna Grace Barlow) who is hosting one last fancy dress, murder mystery party with her friends Oscar (Nico Greetham), Ally (Danielle Kay) Claire (Megan Suri) and Gene (Nick Pugliese). Things don't go to plan though, as secrets threaten to come out, feelings run high, sexuality is bubbling and running higher, plus the fear of acceptance. And then there's JD (Zak Henri), who being the older and dangerously alluring alternative to a night of innocent fun before they have to venture out into the real world the next day!
